A dope track that seems to be hidden under the rug of an oversaturated market; that is “Sojourner”. Off of 9th Wonder’s compilation album Jamla is the Squad 2, the legendary producer recruits hometown peers and two of North Carolina’s finest—J. Cole and Rapsody—to body the Kendra Morris sample. Cole starts the song off with a rambling melody to find his grip but then lets loose after little introduction. The way the sample works in tandem with the flow of the Dreamville boss is soulful. The subject matter deals with Cole’s skepticism of the modern day industry and how his status has lived up to the hype; “scared that I'm too disconnected from the kids' perspective. The world ain't got no patience for some shit that's introspective” resonates with the rapper. As Cole deads the first verse without much room for betterment on the beat, Rapsody swoops in with the rhymes and flow that she effortlessly showcases on any track. A product of 90’s rap, the Grammy-nominated rapper peels back her introspective bars with some notes of cerebral awareness. Her wordplay is uncanny, which leaves the listener to go to Genius.com, and follow along to the message. Alas, two MC’s that contain enough clout, melody, and bars to collaborate on a record that is scored by another NC legend; it’s a match made in heaven. We need more Rapsody and Cole in the near future. Bodying Efforts: 8.6/10 Sample: 8.9/10 Collaboration Equality: 8.5/10
